Piratenpartei criticizes one-sided election contest on StudiVZ

The Pirate Party criticizes the unbalanced information of users on the StudiVZ and MeinVZ social networking sites through special electoral campaigning profiles and the deletion of the Pirate Party's profile. The Pirate Party demands to stop this unilateral informing and a democratic formation of the platform, so that all accredited german parties can represent themselves there.

StudiVZ, one of the largest german "social networks", allows established parties to campagin on their platform for a while now. StudiVZ offers all larger parties, that made it into the parliament at the last elections, special profiles to aid in this process. In contrast, the Pirate Party wasn't offered such a profile and yesterday the site operator even deleted the party's profile without prior announcement.

Angelo Veltens, the Pirate Party candidate for the european election, considers the selecting behaviour of the self-proclaimed draught horse of the web 2.0 election contest as an undemocratic competitive distortion: "You have to imagine it: as the old parties are offered box seats for their police state and luddite policies, the Pirate Party is being thrown out of a web 2.0 community. It is an absurdity that the small parties are discriminated in their struggle for vote favour on the StudiVZ site. Democracy definitely looks different."

Pirate Sebastian Bartsch, who maintained the party's profile, explains: "This action of StudiVZ is not only totally incomprehensible, but will backfire, according to the Streisand effect: Many young and first-time voters noticed us just because of the deletion - the party's group has noticed vivid admission. We hope that StudiVZ eventually agrees with us and allows the Party to represent itself again in future. In contrast to the established parties, we have more to offer than online election posters and we demand that the voter can be comprehensively informed and knows about all electoral options."
