Eigentum ist ein Mechanismus, keine Sache. Er dient sowohl dem Erhalt von Individuum und Gesellschaft als auch dem von Gesellschaft und Individuum. Ohne Eigentum sind sowohl Individuen als auch Gesellschaften handlungsunfähig, sei es Luft, Wasser und Nahrung zum Lebenserhalt, Felder zur Erzeugung jener Nahrung oder Wege und Straßen um das eine zum anderen zu bringen. Besitz oder Eigentum ist die Legitimation der Gesellschaft für das Individuum eine Sache benutzen oder verbrauchen zu dürfen, um selbst wiederum Teil dieser Gesellschaft sein zu können.

So lässt sich Eigentum nicht sparen oder lagern; als Mechanismus lässt es sich lediglich implementieren und anwenden. Es ist nicht persistent, sondern existiert nur in seiner Funktion [so wie eine Unterhaltung nur existiert, wenn sie stattfindet. Man kann sie aufzeichnen, wiedergeben oder sich daran erinnern, die Existenz jedoch ist momentaner Natur].

Has anyone ever thought about property not as a thing but a mechanism? A mechanism to express and distribute trust in other people.

For a long time I plead that there was no such thing as property, that it is an illusion manifested by the obvious nonexistence of patent rights and intellectual property. How can you own an idea? How could you steal an idea? It is not possible.

But the idea of property persists, it even is declared a basic right in constitutions all over the world. So what is it? If it is not a thing you can have, a thing you own, a thing collectable?

It is a mechanism. It is the legitimation of society to an individual, so it may employ, use and consume a thing for its own prosperity and by that the prosperity of the society it is part of.

This legitimation, this declaration of trust is not of persistence; it is ephemeral. Its nature is comparable to that of a conversation. It only exists in the moment it is happening. It may be remembered or recoreded, but in the rupture of trust, property disappears.
